Comprehensive Editing

WARNING: the before and after documents may shock you.

Have you ever looked at a document and thought "🤨"? Me too. Thankfully, there is comprehensive editing.

Comprehensive editing requires a high level of detail and meticulousness to improve a document’s overall usability. It is a process that requires extensive research and planning before editing can begin.

What you’ll see in the documents below are the before and after results of a freelance comprehensive editing project for a local Subway franchise. The client wanted a full redesign and organization of several job descriptions and an operations manual.

Understanding the purpose of each document and its audience was a key factor in this redesign. The job descriptions needed to clearly communicate duties and requirements, while the manual’s purpose was to inform new employees of company policies and procedures. Editing for completeness and accuracy of information required several rounds of editing and proofing.

I also found UX design principles could be applied to document design as well. Creating the documents with a hierarchical structure enhanced the documents’ navigation, organization, and consistency.
